Is your website vendor prepared to handle a denial-of-service attack? A denial-of-service attack, often referred to as a DoS or DDoS attack,?happens when cyber-attackers, or hackers,?create a situation where a network or?website(s) can't be accessed by it's intended users. The denial of service is created cutting off the web host's access to the Internet. Bottom line: users can't access your website. Not a good thing at all. Unhappy users,?very unhappy website owners and extremely unhappy web hosts.?
Common targets of DoS attacks are credit card companies, banks, and international companies caught up in high level political issues and scandals. The infamous hacker group Anonymous is known for having contributed to several high profile DoS attacks.
Cobalt suffered a?DoS attack yesterday morning that was the result of a massive surge in external traffic to the network. The affected both the main Cobalt company website and their network of dealer websites - including the US network of 4,400 General Motors websites.?
GM's official statement regarding the DoS:?"An external network issue caused outages with General Motors dealer Web sites today. This issue resulted in slow response times. We quickly resolved the issue and continue to monitor so we can ensure the site provides the service levels our dealers and customers have come to expect."
While this?attack didn't take?the websites completely offline, traffic was slowed making wait time and page loads extremely long - enough of an impact to effect normal consumer usage and dealership operations.?
Cobalt was able to resolve the DoS attack by 2pm and restore speeds back to normal.?
This is a very rare occurrence, but is still worthy of asking your website vendor how prepared they are to handle?this type of emergency situation.?
