Eagles WR Maclin tears ACL, could miss season

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Eagles wide receiver Jeremy Maclin tore the ACL in his right knee during practice Saturday and could miss the season.
Maclin went down at the end of a non-contact drill and appeared to be in pain while he was on the ground for several minutes. He was helped onto the cart and needed assistance getting off it and going into the team's practice facility.
"Appreciate all the love and support twitter fam....sad day but I have setbacks my entire life. Minor setback for a MAJOR comeback! #birdgang," he wrote on Twitter.
Philadelphia is in its second full practice under new coach Chip Kelly. The first practice with pads is Sunday.
The Eagles signed wide receiver David Ball to the 90-man roster. The 29-year-old Ball played for Kelly at New Hampshire, and broke Jerry Rice's Division I-AA record for touchdown receptions. Ball spent time in training camp with Chicago and the New York Jets in 2007-08.
Maclin is headed into his fifth season with the Eagles. He led the team with 69 catches for 857 yards and seven touchdowns last season, and the former first-round pick is in the final year of his rookie contract.
Two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DeSean Jackson is Philadelphia's other starter. The team has veterans Jason Avant and Riley Cooper, along with several younger wideouts in camp.
Maclin has averaged 64 catches, 863 yards and six TDs in his first four seasons. His best year was in 2011 when he had 70 receptions for 964 yards and 10 TDs.

Tigers star Cabrera returns, homers in first AB
DETROIT (AP) ? Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera has homered in his first at-bat after missing four games because of an injured left hip.
The reigning Triple Crown winner was back in Detroit's lineup for Saturday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. He gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a line drive over the fence in left field.
It was Cabrera's 32nd homer of the year. He has 97 RBIs.
Detroit outfielder Torii Hunter was also back after sitting out Friday night's game against Philadelphia. Hunter left Thursday's game against the Chicago White Sox in the eighth inning because of a sore left Achilles tendon. He said the problem was caused by dress shoes that were too tight.

Apple's developer site partially restored after cyber attack

Apple has partially restored its main website for developers, eight days after shuttering it in response to a cyber attack that prompted a harried upgrade to prevent future breaches.
Apple's developer site, which the company uses to communicate with its community of close to 6 million software developers, was back online on Friday, though some sections, including the forums and the member center, were still offline.
The company had blocked access to the site after an intrusion last week and it is still not clear what data, if any, was compromised by the attack.
An Apple spokesperson confirmed that the company had sent an email to its developer community informing them about the incident.
"Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles, software downloads, and other developer services are now available," Apple said in the email and on a developer update page on the site.
Seven of the 15 services on the website, including the iOS, Mac and Safari developer centers, were online at 8:15 p.m. ET on Friday.
News of the developer site being restored was earlier reported by technology blog AllThingsD.

ATLANTA (AP) ? LeBron James is taking some of his talents during the offseason to a best-selling basketball video game franchise as a music curator.
2K Sports announced Friday that the two-time NBA champion of the Miami Heat selected 20 songs for the soundtrack of the upcoming "NBA 2K14." The league's four-time MVP is also the cover athlete of the popular video game.
James said in a statement that he is honored to be the first cover athlete to choose songs for the soundtrack. He follows his friend and Grammy-winning rapper Jay-Z, who was the executive producer of the last year's installment that sold more than 4.5 million copies.
"2K is letting me take control of some important elements in NBA 2K14, including this year's soundtrack," James said. "I love that I'm the first NBA 2K cover athlete to choose the soundtrack."
Some of the songs featured on the game's soundtrack are Drake's "Started From The Bottom," Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight," Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," featuring Pharrell Williams and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Can't Hold Us," with Ray Dalton. Other music acts featured are Jay-Z, Coldplay, Robin Thicke, The Black Keys, Eminem, Fly Union, Gorillaz, Imagine Dragons, Jada Kiss, John Legend, Kanye West, Rick Ross, Kendrick Lamar, Nas and Puff Daddy.
James is the first solo cover athlete to cover the game in two years since Michael Jordan. The game is expected to go on sale Oct. 1.

Fight over Detroit bankruptcy begins in federal court

DETROIT (Reuters) - A showdown over the biggest municipal bankruptcy filing in U.S. history begins in a federal court on Wednesday morning as creditors challenge its legality.
Attorneys for Kevyn Orr, a corporate bankruptcy lawyer tapped by Michigan officials in March as Detroit's emergency manager, want U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes to put on hold a flurry of lawsuits claiming the Chapter 9 bankruptcy filing violates the state constitution.
Rhodes agreed on Monday to an expedited hearing requested by Orr that seeks to extend Chapter 9's automatic stay of litigation to lawsuits filed against Governor Rick Snyder, Michigan Treasurer Andy Dillon, and Orr by Detroit workers, retirees and pension funds that are pending in state court in Michigan's capital city of Lansing.
Those lawsuits were halted by a Michigan Appeals Court panel on Tuesday in response to State Attorney General Bill Schuette's request to stop proceedings while he seeks to overturn orders issued by a lower court judge hearing the cases. One of those orders directs Orr to withdraw the bankruptcy petition on state constitutional grounds.
The federal court in Detroit is expecting an overflow crowd of media, attorneys, labor union representatives and others participating in or witnessing the unfolding of the historic drama.
Detroit, a former manufacturing powerhouse and cradle of the U.S. automotive industry and Motown music, has struggled for decades as companies moved or closed, crime became rampant and its population shriveled by almost two thirds since the 1950s to about 700,000 now. The city's revenue failed to keep pace with spending, leading to years of budget deficits and a dependence on borrowing to stay afloat.
Concerned that retirement benefits will be slashed, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 25, which represents about 70 percent of Detroit's civilian workforce, on Monday filed an objection to pushing the lawsuits aside. They said if they were stopped, Orr, Michigan's governor and others would be able to continue to operate beyond state constitutional authority.
In a June 14 proposal to creditors, Orr called for "significant cuts in accrued, vested pension amounts for both active and currently retired persons."
Bill Wertheimer, an attorney handling one of the retiree lawsuits, said pension benefits "are sacrosanct under state law."
"The state has certain powers that the federal government cannot superimpose itself on, unlike a normal bankruptcy," he said.
JUDGE SEEN HALTING LAWSUITS
Rhodes could rule immediately that all the litigation seeking to derail Detroit's bankruptcy petition be put on hold, according to legal experts.
Laura Bartell, a law professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, said Judge Rhodes was not likely to permit interference from Michigan judges.
"I personally think the argument that a bankruptcy filing violates the Michigan Constitution is specious and will be quickly dismissed by Rhodes," she said.
Ken Schneider, a bankruptcy attorney with Detroit-based Schneider Miller PC, predicted the city's bankruptcy case will proceed. "The federal constitution preempts state law," he said.
A 2012 Michigan law that governs emergency managers like Orr who are selected by the state to run fiscally troubled local governments gives the governor the final say on whether to file for bankruptcy.
Bankruptcy opponents could attempt to appeal to the federal district court any order by Judge Rhodes enforcing the stay of litigation against Detroit. But, because such an order would not be considered a final judgment under bankruptcy laws, the federal court could decline to hear the appeal.
In a declaratory judgment on Friday, state Judge Rosemarie Aquilina ordered Orr to withdraw the bankruptcy petition, saying the state law that allowed Snyder to approve the bankruptcy filing violated the Michigan constitution. The governor cannot take actions that would violate constitutional protections covering retirement benefits for public workers, she said.
Aquilina's order was in response to a lawsuit filed this month by a Detroit worker and retiree. Two other lawsuits are also pending, one backed by the United Auto Workers union and another filed by the city's general retirement system and police and fire retirement system.
NEXT STEPS IN BANKRUPTCY
To remain in bankruptcy court, Detroit must prove that it is insolvent and that it made a good faith effort to negotiate with its creditors, including its employee pension funds, over the city's more than $18 billion of debt and unfunded liabilities. That includes $5.7 billion in liabilities for healthcare and other retiree benefits and a $3.5 billion pension liability.
Union officials on Monday contended some of the city's 48 bargaining units were shut out of pre-bankruptcy negotiations, although Orr's spokesman said Orr was not obligated to engage in collective bargaining negotiations with the unions under the 2012 state emergency manager law.
The arguments over eligibility could take a long time as the unions challenge the legality of the filing. In the case of Stockton, California's bankruptcy case, the eligibility determination took a year.

Stand by your man: Admiration, puzzlement over Weiner's wife
NEW YORK (AP) ? When Huma Abedin first started getting media attention years ago, some people couldn't help but wonder what this beautiful, ambitious woman with high-fashion sense and a world-class Rolodex saw in Anthony Weiner.
That's a question New Yorkers might be asking themselves again after revelations that Weiner, now a candidate for mayor of New York, didn't immediately give up his habit of sending sexual pictures and messages to female fans after his humiliating resignation from Congress in 2011.
Abedin herself took a shot at an answer in an awkward joint news conference Tuesday, saying she had forgiven her husband and felt his marital indiscretions were "between us." She offered an even more basic explanation in a first-person essay in Harper's Bazaar due on newsstands in September.
"Quite simply, I love my husband, I love my city, and I believe in what he wants to do for the people of New York," she wrote.
Will that be enough to satisfy a bewildered public? Maybe not. But people who go searching for a deeper motive are almost certain to get it wrong.
"None of us know what's going on with that couple now," said Stephen Medvic, an associate professor of government at Franklin & Marshall College in Pennsylvania and author of the book, "In Defense of Politicians."
"She made a statement," he said. "Let's leave it at that. Let's not try to put into somebody's mind what's not there."
In an email sent to campaign supporters Tuesday, Weiner tried to explain his actions, saying he turned to women on the Internet after his marriage hit a rocky patch.
"Sending these embarrassing messages to women online, whom I never met, was a personal failing that was hurtful to my wife and a part of my life that Huma and I have put behind us. These things I did, as you have read in the papers, didn't happen once. It was a terrible mistake that I unfortunately returned to during a rough time in our marriage," he wrote. "After a lot of reflection, some professional help, and a general reorientation of my life, Huma has given me a second chance."
Abedin now seems to be trying to shake off a cloud of humiliation, which seems an exceeding unlikely place for someone whose reputation as a top aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton was based on an uncanny ability to navigate the chaos of presidential campaigns and global diplomatic trips with the poise of Grace Kelly.
Born in Kalamazoo, Mich., Abedin moved as a toddler to Saudi Arabia, where her father, an Islamic scholar born in India, ran an institute that studied Muslim communities in non-Muslim societies, and her mother, a sociology professor, taught at a women's college.
Educated at George Washington University, Abedin entered public service as a White House intern and quickly established a special relationship with the then first lady. She has been at Clinton's side ever since, joining her Senate staff then her presidential campaign before becoming her deputy chief of staff at the State Department.
By all accounts, Abedin has been more than a trusted employee. When Abedin was preparing to marry Weiner in 2010, Clinton said at one celebration that if she had a second daughter, it would be Huma.
Long known as a behind-the-scenes presence, Abedin began to attract more public attention after gushing 2007 profiles in the New York Observer and Vogue magazine, which photographed her looking like a movie star in a red gown. Those and other articles attributed her with a frightening work ethic and an almost supernatural ability to troubleshoot and stop problems in their tracks without breaking a sweat.
Weiner was quoted in the Observer piece as saying, "I think there's some dispute as to whether Huma's actually human or not." At the time, the couple hadn't yet disclosed that they were dating. The two knew each other in political circles for years before becoming romantically involved.
When her new husband's political career disintegrated in 2011 just as she was about to have a child, Abedin couldn't escape the obvious comparisons with her mentor, Clinton, who shoved her own husband's scandals aside to become a massive figure in American politics.
In some ways, the additional name recognition brought by the scandal made her a target.
Last July, U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, a Minnesota Republican, wrote a letter to the State Department accusing Abedin's late father, mother and brother of being connected to the Muslim Brotherhood, the Egyptian Islamist political party.
That unsubstantiated allegation drew a rebuke from even some Republicans. Sen. John McCain gave a speech on the Senate floor praising Abedin's patriotism and calling her representative of "what is best about America."
Since then, Abedin has appeared dedicated to resurrecting her husband's political career.
She urged him to run for mayor and helped arrange a lengthy New York Times Magazine profile last spring in which the couple talked at length about their struggle to overcome marital problems. In those interviews, they did not disclose that Weiner had continued to chase other women online even after his resignation.
As Weiner's unlikely mayoral campaign has picked up steam, Abedin has helped organize the campaign staff, become his most important fundraiser, and hit the campaign trail, where she told reporters that she was "having so much fun."
Her nervous public appearance with Weiner on Tuesday looked anything but.
"My heart just reaches out to her. She's such a classy, beautiful lady and I just hate to see her in this," U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel said.
People watching the eye-popping spectacle were sure to wonder why she would subject herself to that kind of torture, especially since her career path would appear to be bright even if her husband left public life forever.
Abedin left the State Department when Clinton retired and now heads her private office. If Clinton runs for president again in 2016, most observers expect her to play a role in the campaign.
Stephanie Coontz, who wrote "Marriage: A History" and teaches family studies at Evergreen State University in Olympia, Wash., said it's a shame that her response to her husband's behavior would be a subject of attention at all.
"Everyone is second-guessing the woman's decision," she said. "You saw it with Hillary Clinton. 'Oh, she's manipulative. She's power-hungry.' We do this instead of recognize that marriage and love are complex.
"Someday, it'll be a man standing there ashen-faced, and we'll say, 'Oh my God,' because his masculinity will be called into question," she said. "But things happen in marriages. Couples find a way to deal or they don't. We don't need more reality shows!"

Jindal spends this week in Colorado with GOP
BATON ROUGE, La.?Gov. Bobby Jindal is on the road in Colorado this week, mingling with his Republican colleagues.
Jindal's office said the GOP governor left for Aspen on Tuesday to attend Republican Governors' Association events. Jindal is chairman of the association.
On Thursday, Jindal is speaking as part of a panel of Republican governors at the Aspen Institute. He'll be on the panel with Govs. Chris Christie of New Jersey, Mike Pence of Indiana and Scott Walker of Wisconsin.
Jindal's office says the governor is scheduled to return to Baton Rouge on Friday.

Life, According to Reese: Pets are family members for LIFE! | REESE ...
I have two ?daughters?, a cat named LC and a bird named Andre. Both were adopted, except one was on purpose and the other an accident.
When I was living in Melbourne I adopted LC when she was a few weeks old and weighed about 800g. I searched for her for many weeks and I thought about it long and hard; do I want to be responsible for another life for the next twenty years?
When LC and I first met it was literally love at first sight and she has been one of the greatest things I have ever done with my life. Yes, she?s a handful. Yes, she takes up a lot of my spare time. Yes, she?s a lot of hard work. But she?s hilarious, affectionate, a tart (especially around males) and everyone who has ever met her says she?s lovely.
A few months ago, my then-boyfriend went overseas. He was the owner of the white cockatiel Andre (she?s a girl) who is about three and a half years-old now.
So he finally moved overseas I decided to look after her while he was away. I couldn?t bear to think that I?d never see her again or not regularly anyway. So, I took her in.
For those who don?t know Andre? she?s a white and grey cockatiel and she?s the funniest little bird you could ever see. She?s FAMOUS on Instagram and is one tough little angry bird considering there is a natural born predator around her 24/7. She loves plain cooked pasta, crunchy green vegetables and sitting on your shoulder til she falls asleep. She?s not used to everyone, but she does eventually warm up to you.
It was tough trying to keep LC and Andre apart or at least on terms when the cat didn?t want to eat the bird. I tried everything: I tried keeping Andre in the shower because it was the least likely place LC would want to enter. I?ve tried to keep her on the balcony but then she was frightened by noises, other birds and people, not to mention the weather isn?t awesome where my apartment is situated.
But with a lot of work and a lot of patience LC and Andre get along like a house on fire. LC knows that the bird isn?t something to eat or play with and Andre knows how to fight off the cat when she gets uncomfortable. All in all, all the girls at Atomic HQ were working out great.
Fast forward to when the ex moved back to Sydney. He doesn?t want to take Andre back and sent many texts and emails saying that if I was to give her back he was going to put an ad on Gumtree for someone to take ownership of her ? someone who REALLY wants her.
OK. I want to just state that I have absolutely no qualms looking after a cat and a bird together. The issue was that I didn?t agree to take Andre in forever ? only for the length of time that he was overseas.
I went over it in my head so many times thinking had I made a mistake somewhere? Was I in the wrong? Had I agreed to take Andre in forever and simply forgot? I asked all of my friends and family who knew I was looking after Andre ? had I made a mistake? But they were all under the same assumption that I was looking after her short-term.
It really upsets me that he doesn?t care about HIS bird?s welfare. I?ve taken her to the vet, I?ve bought her toys and spent time with her and looked after her and not once did I complain or ask for any sort of financial help from him.
I even remember asking him when he was buying her from the birdman in Rosebery, Are you sure you want to be a pet owner? And his answer was always the same: YES! He loved birds. He wanted to buy one. So, why after a short stint overseas doesn?t he want his bird back?
His answer? ?I don?t have room for a bird/pet in my life. Andre isn?t MY bird anymore.?
I?m sorry, but if you don?t have room for a pet in your life, WHY DID YOU BUY ONE IN THE FIRST PLACE?!
So I am now a single mother of two girls and although it does get tough at times having to balance sharing attention to the both of them, I wouldn?t dream of giving up Andre for the ?convenience? of being just a cat owner.
It absolutely breaks my heart that people like my ex actually exists who will not take responsibility for their animals and think that it?s just as easy as palming them off to a willing participant or in my ex?s case, take advantage of person?s generosity.
People who don?t take any responsibility for their pets are disgusting! Even moreso, people who think a pet is a short-term commitment are repugnant human beings themselves. If you don?t want to put the hard yards in, don?t get an animal. Period. It?s just that simple.
Being an animal owner is a big deal. A VERY big deal. I?ve seen people buy pets because they?re so cute and adorable but they don?t even comprehend that animals take a lot of work. They need to be fed, they need to be groomed, they need to be taken out for walks, taken to the vet and given a comfortable home to live in. I also can?t stress enough how important it is for your animals to be desexed; it?s one of those fundamental things that should be done when you commit to a pet.
Hundreds of thousands of animals ? dogs and cats mostly ? are put down every year because they can?t find forever homes. It?s also alarming that a lot of the pets surrendered to shelters often occur straight after Christmas and New Years, because people give puppies and kittens as gifts and don?t think that perhaps it might not be the best one.
Lastly, if you are looking for an animal to be a part of your family, you really can?t go wrong at animals shelters: RSPCA, Cat Protection Society and Lost Dogs Home are ALL great places to start. Check your local vets if they have an adoption programs because nothing is more rewarding that giving a cat or a dog a forever home who didn?t have the best start to life.
LC is adopted because I wouldn?t even dream of buying her from a pet store. LC cost $130 and she came desexed, microchipped, wormed, deflead, fully vaccinated, along with about a month?s worth of kitten food and milk. (Read the love story of LC here.) Pet shops cost FIVE TIMES as much and that don?t even come desexed or microchipped; you?ve got do that yourself.
So, the moral of the story is? DO NOT be monster and buy an animal thinking it?s short-term. They will be yours for LIFE (or the length of their life) and you have to wholeheartedly put in the effort because surrendering an animal is cruel, heartless and should NEVER be done!

Steven Soderbergh donates $10K to Spike Lee's kickstarter project

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Spike Lee thanked Steven Soderbergh in a recent interview for doing the right thing by supporting independent filmmaking.
The "Old Boy" director, who is trying to raise $1.25 million on Kickstarter for his newest joint, told NextMovie that Soderbergh was one of three backers who have pledged $10,000 to the project, which has racked up just under $105,000 total. The generous donation earns Soderbergh the top prize: A dinner and basketball date with Lee.
"I'm taking him to dinner and we're going to the game together," Lee said.
Lee, an avid New York Knicks fan, calls the incentive the "playa-playas" award, because recipients will have to honor to sit in his wife Tonya's seat "front row in the best house at the world's most famous arena - Madison Square Garden."
Soderbergh has, apparently, not yet requested which NBA opponent he'd like to see the Knicks take on.
"I don't even know if he likes sports, so I'm gonna pick the game for him," Lee added. "But I'm giving a huge shout-out to my man Steven Soderbergh for the support and I'm really humbled with Steven coming on board and doing that. Thank you, Steven."
The movie Lee hopes to make with the money fans are willing to provide does not have a title yet, but the director described it on his Kickstarter page as being a "funny, sexy, and bloody" tale about "human beings who are addicted to blood."
"And it's not 'Blacula,'" Lee assured.

Church burglary suspect arrested
Deputies in York County have arrested a man in connection to a church burglary.
Lt. Dennis Ivey with the York-Poquoson Sheriff?s Office said the Grafton Christian Church was broken into sometime between July 9 and July 10 in the 100 block of Brick Church Road. Electronic equipment was stolen from the church.
Further investigation revealed Justin Bluhm as a suspect. Ivey said Bluhm, 34, was arrested Monday and charged with burglary, grand larceny and larceny with the intent to sell stolen property.
Most of the property was recovered, Ivey added.

"There will be a limited release of (Palestinian) prisoners," Steinitz, the minister in charge of international relations, strategic affairs and intelligence, told public radio without giving numbers.
He said some of those to be freed have been in Israeli jails for up to 30 years.
