Intel releases Atom powered Windows 8 tablets

CBR Staff Writer Published 28 September 2012

Expected to go on sale in October 2012

Intel has released new Intel Atom processor powered tablets operating on Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system as well as roped in device makers including Samsung Electronics and Hewlett Packard (HP).

According to the chip maker, the new 'Atom Z2760' - formerly known as 'Clover Trail', which is expected to be on sale in October, will allow users t operate broadly deployed software including Word and Excel, as well as offering connecting capabilities to peripherals including printers.

The new tablet incorporates Imagination Technologies' PowerVR SGX545 graphics core with the Atom architecture on the Z2760 which is claimed to offer the best, low-power Windows 8 tablet experience.

Intel Mobile and Communications Group Application Processor Platforms general manager Erik Reid said this is just the beginning of the firm's effort in the tablet market, and it aims to deliver products that fit the spectrum of evolving needs of both consumers andbusiness users.

"When people or corporations buy a device with Intel Inside?, they're getting the best of Windows 8 features with a computing experience that just works," Reid said.

It also lengthens battery life, enabling tablets to run, said Intel applications processor division chief Eric Reid.

The company claims dual-core, four-thread SoC will stretch battery life and offers three weeks of connected standby while allowing more than ten hours of streaming high-definition video.

Intel's new tablets will support the current Windows applications and the security and manageability features corporate IT managers demand.

Ancient burial shroud offers up surprise

Ancient scraps of fabric found in a grave in Denmark are not made of cultivated flax as once believed, but instead are woven from imported wild nettles, suggesting the grave's inhabitant may have traveled far for burial. ?

This discovery, announced Friday in the journal Scientific Reports, casts a new light on the textile trade in Bronze Age Europe, said study researcher Ulla Mannering, an archaeologist at the University of Copenhagen.

"Since the Stone Age, they had very well-developed agriculture and technology for producing linen textiles," Mannering told LiveScience. "So it's really unusual that a society which has established agriculture would also take in material from things that are not of the normal standardized agricultural production" ? in other words, wild plants.

A luxurious shroud
The soft and shiny fabric dates back to between 940 B.C. and 750 B.C., making it about 2,800 years old. It was discovered in Voldtofte, Denmark, at a rich Bronze Age burial ground called Lusehoj. The Bronze Age ran from about 3200 B.C. to 600 B.C. in Europe.

The fabric was wrapped around a bundle of cremated remains in a bronze urn. It was a luxurious piece of material, Mannering said. [ 10 Weird Ways We Deal With the Dead ]

"The fibers we get from the European nettle are very, very fine and soft and shiny, and we often say this is a sort of prehistoric silk textile," Mannering said. (Silk, made from insect cocoons, is known for its shimmery texture.)

Previous analysis pegged the Danish fabric as woven from flax, a plant widely cultivated in the region. But along with nanophysicist Bodil Holst of the University of Bergen in Norway, Mannering and her colleagues used advanced methods to reanalyze the scraps of cloth. By studying the fiber orientation as well as the presence of certain crystals found in plants, the researchers were able to learn that the fabric is not flax at all, but nettle, a group of plants known for the needlelike stingers that line their stems and leaves.

Nor is the nettle local, Mannering said. Different soil regions contain different variations of elements. The variation of one of these elements, strontium, found in the fabric, was not local to Denmark, suggesting the plants the textile was made from grew elsewhere.

There are a few regions that match the strontium profile, the researchers found, but the most likely candidate is southwest Austria. The bronze burial urn holding the remains is from Austria, Mannering said, and it makes sense that the fabric might be too.

A well-traveled man?
Despite these imported grave goods, the remains appear to be those of a Danish man, Mannering said. The personal objects in the grave, such as two razors, suggest he was a Scandinavian, albeit perhaps a well-traveled one, she said.

"Maybe he died in Austria and was wrapped in this Austrian urn and Austrian textile and was brought back to Denmark in this condition and then put in a big burial mound," Mannering said. "The personal objects that were placed inside the urn together with this textile and the bones indicate that he is a male of Scandinavian origin, but it doesn't mean that he couldn't have died abroad."

Bronze Age Europeans lived an agricultural life and traded many goods with one another, especially the bronze that gave the era its name, Mannering said. The nettle fabric may have been an ancient luxury good for Bronze Age elite, she said.

"It shows that they also knew how to get fibers from wild plants, and they wanted these fibers probably because of their very different and unique appearance," she said.

Spain, Portugal hit with anti-austerity protests

Sergio Perez / Reuters

Protestors shout slogans as they fill up Neptuno Square during a demonstration against government austerity measures in Madrid.

By NBC News wire services

MADRID ? Tens of thousands of Spaniards and Portuguese rallied in the streets of their countries? capitals Saturday to protest enduring deep economic pain from austerity cuts.

In Madrid, demonstrators approached parliament for the third time this week to vent their anger against tax hikes, government spending cuts and the highest unemployment rate among the 17 nations that use the euro currency.

The boisterous crowds in the Spanish capital let off ear-splitting whistles near parliament and yelled ??Fire them, fire them!?? -- referring to the conservative government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

Rajoy?s administration presented a 2013 draft budget on Friday that will cut overall spending by 40 billion euros ($51.7 billion), freezing the salaries of public workers, cutting spending for unemployment benefits and even reducing spending for Spain?s royal family next year by 4 percent.

Pablo Rodriguez, a 24-year-old student doing a master?s in agricultural development in Denmark, said the austerity measures and bad economy mean most of his friends in Spain are unemployed or doing work they didn?t train for.

Andres Kudacki / AP

A picture of Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is seen during the demonstration in Madrid.

Spain's unemployment rate is almost 25 percent, and more than half of people under 24 are jobless.

??I would love to work here, but there is nothing for me here,?? Rodriguez said. ??By the time the economy improves it will be too late. I will be settled somewhere else with a family. One of the disasters in Spain is they spent so much to educate me and so many others and they will lose us.??

He doubts he will put his education to use in Spain until he is 35 or 40, if ever, will probably get job abroad and stay.

In Lisbon, retired banker Antonio Trinidade said the budget cuts Portugal is locked into in return for the nation?s ?78 billion ($101 billion) bailout are making the country?s economy the worst he has seen in his lifetime. His pension has been cut, and he said countless young Portuguese are increasingly heading abroad because they can?t make a living at home.

??The government and the troika controlling what we do because of the bailout just want to cut more and more and rob from us,?? Trinidade said, referring to the troika of creditors -- the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund. ??The young don?t have any future, and the country is on the edge of an abyss. I'm getting toward the end of my life, but these people in their 20s or 30s don?t have jobs, or a future.??

In Spain, Rajoy has an absolute majority and has pushed through waves of austerity measures over the last nine months -- trying to prevent Spain from being forced into the same kind of bailouts taken by Portugal, Ireland and Greece.

The protests near Spain?s parliament turned violent Tuesday and Wednesday nights when protesters clashed with riot police, who barricaded entry to the streets surrounding government buildings. Dozens of people were arrested and injured.

Investors worried about Spain?s economic viability have forced up the interest rate they are willing to pay to buy Spanish bonds. The country?s banks hurting from a property boom that went bust are set to get help soon from a ?100 billion ($129 billion) financial lifeline from the eurozone, and Rajoy is pondering whether to ask for help from the ECB to buy Spanish bonds.

Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro said Saturday that the budget cuts for next year were necessary to ease market tensions and try to bring down high interest rates Spain must pay to get investors to buy its bonds.

Google Maps Add New Imagery in 51 Cities

I guess you could compare the timing of Google?s new release of 45? imagery to rubbing salt into an open wound as far as Apple is concerned. In actuality, Google probably hasn?t even considered Apple in the planned release, but the timing couldn?t be any better for the company.

It has added 45-degree views in 37 U.S. and 14 international cities, and added new high-res aerial and satellite images in 17 cities and 112 countries/regions.

Samsung Array (Sprint)

By Alex Colon

It's getting harder and harder to find a good phone?these days that isn't a smartphone?and that goes double if you're looking for something with a keyboard. The $19.99 Samsung Array doesn't do much to remedy the situation, but at this point, any option is a welcome one. To that end, the Array is a simple feature phone with a decent slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It doesn't have 3G, and its feature set is rather limited. But if all you want is to talk and text, it should suffice.

Sprint's Version and Conclusions
This is the same phone as the Samsung Array?we reviewed over on Boost Mobile.?For a closer look at the phone, read our review and check out the slideshow below. It's the same device, and since Boost runs on Sprint's network, we expect it to perform similarly.

There are so few keyboarded feature phones available that I don't want to ding the Samsung Array too much. If you need to talk and text and not much else it should do the trick. The LG Rumor Reflex??is another decent option. It has an eco-friendly design with a larger display and a nicer keyboard, though it isn't as simple to use as the Array. The Kyocera Brio??has a BlackBerry-style slab keyboard and better call quality, but next to nothing in the way of features. The Kyocera Milano, meanwhile, features a whimsical design and decent call quality, but also comes up short for media.?

Reckitt Benckiser Stops Processing Orders - to Improve Customer ...

OXFORD, England, September 27, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

One of the world's largest producers of health, hygiene and home products has taken the radical decision to stop processing orders within their European customer service operations. The result? A material increase in customer service with a lower overhead.

As well as EDI orders, Reckitt Benckiser receives thousands of customer orders that must be manually rekeyed into their ERP system - a common problem for consumer goods companies. ?Reckitt Benckiser adopted the OmPrompt Order Automation service to release valuable resource from order keying to focus on higher-value activity such as developing customers.

"We pride ourselves on innovation and delivering great customer service," explains Fr?d?ric Massoubre, Supply Chain Director, Northern and Central Europe. "Our customers want to order using a variety of methods, including fax, email and EDI. But it doesn't make sense for us to manually rekey customer orders. By using the OmPrompt service, our customers continue to send orders in their preferred format. OmPrompt processes these transactions and within minutes we have clean, valid orders within our JD Edwards system ready for picking and despatch."

Massoubre makes clear that this initiative is more than an exercise to reduce keying effort. "As well as avoiding rekeying we have increased the speed and accuracy of order capture, reducing our costs and contributing to our perfect order goals," he said.

According to Jamie Nichols, Director of Consumer Goods at OmPrompt, this is a priority for the whole sector: "All suppliers are struggling to balance the challenge of increasingly demanding customers with a lean operating environment. Retailers are introducing a growing number of initiatives that require support from suppliers, such as reduced lead times and the move to 7-day ordering. OmPrompt allows suppliers to improve the existing service whilst freeing up resource to add value in the customer relationship or supply chain."

Reckitt Benckiser narrowly missed a top 10 position in the Forbes 2011 'World's Most Innovative Companies' just behind Apple, Google and Amazon.com. So can only innovative companies make this work? Massoubre thinks not: "We were processing live orders within weeks. OmPrompt is delivered as a 'black box' service - it required minimal input from our own resources and the OmPrompt team gave us confidence that they had the experience to make the initiative a success. We are delighted with the results and are extending our use of OmPrompt to other regions."

Murdered Kansas doctor's abortion clinic may reopen

Kelly Glasscock / Getty Images file

Flowers are seen in front of the Women's Health Care Services abortion clinic and serve as a memorial to Dr. George Tiller's death May 31, 2009 in Wichita, Kansas.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

The shuttered Wichita abortion clinic formerly operated by the late Dr. George Tiller has been bought by an abortion-rights group that intends to reopen it as a family and women's health center that will offer abortions, among other services, the group's executive director said Wednesday.

Julie Burkhart said the Wichita-based non-profit group Trust Women Foundation Inc. purchased Tiller's former clinic in late August. Erin Thompson, an attorney for Tiller's widow, Jeanne, confirmed the sale.

Burkhart, a former Tiller employee who also founded a separate Trust Women political action committee, has said for months that she was trying to raise money for a new clinic in Wichita. Most of Kansas, except for the Kansas City area, has been without an abortion clinic since an anti-abortion zealot murdered Tiller at the doctor's church in May 2009.

Tiller was among a few U.S. doctors known to perform abortions in the final weeks of pregnancy, but Burkhart said the new clinic won't offer such services, largely because Kansas legislators have tightened restrictions on late-term procedures. But she said the new clinic will perform abortions earlier in pregnancy as part of a wide range of obstetrical and family care.

Burkhart declined to discuss the details of the sale, but property tax records available online list the appraised value of the property as $734,100. Burkhart said she can't say yet exactly when the new clinic will open or how many doctors will work there.

"It's about more than abortion. We're about serving the needs of women," Burkhart said during a telephone interview. "Thousands of women right now have to travel three hours-plus for medical services. It's a burden on women. It's a burden on women's families."

Kansas has three abortion clinics, but all are in the Kansas City area. The Wichita Eagle first reported the sale of Tiller's former clinic, based on public records.

Abortion opponents have been watching for signs that a new clinic would open in Wichita, and earlier this month, anti-abortion groups said they expected Burkhart to open one early next year.

"It is tragic Burkhart appears poised to re-engage in destroying unborn children and exploiting women for money," Mary Kay Culp, executive director of Kansans for Life, said in a statement Wednesday.

Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com?

In a recent advertisement circulated by email to abortion-rights supporters, Trust Women said it was looking for medical staff experienced in first and early-second trimester abortions and planned to open its clinic between mid-November and January 2013.

Burkhart said the group looked at seven or eight buildings but concluded others were not the correct size or needed too much renovation. Tiller's former clinic, with 8,800 square feet of space, had been listed for sale starting in 2010.

"We never looked at renting," Burkhart said. "Frankly, this building was the best building. It made the most sense for us."

But when Tiller operated the clinic, it was the site of regular protests by abortion opponents, including large "Summer of Mercy" demonstrations both in 1991 and 2001. Burkhart was a clinic employee and ran ProKanDo, a PAC formed by Tiller, from 2002 to 2009.

Mark Gietzen, president of the Kansas Coalition for Life, said in a statement this week that his group, which coordinated years of daily protests outside Tiller's clinic, would restart its efforts should another abortion clinic open in Wichita, the Wichita Eagle reported.

"KCFL volunteers intend to be on-site to offer financial help, housing, and other forms of direct support to abortion-bound women who feel forced into having an abortion by circumstances beyond their control," Gietzen said in the statement.

Burkhart acknowledged the building's past was an issue in the search for a new clinic site but said the good that can come from reopening it as a medical center "outweighs any stigma that people might see."

"We want to work to take the abortion piece of health care out of the corner and normalize it," Burkhart said. ?Women should not be ashamed. Women should not be intimidated."

Louisville woman uses inspiring personal story to spread Autism ...

Print

?

? ? ? ? ? ? At first glance, Jennifer Adams-Tucker?s family looks pretty standard- a mom, a dad, two girls, and two boys. However, when three of your four children are diagnosed with autism, your story is anything but standard. And that?s the story that Jennifer wants to share with others to prove that individuals with Autism can ?shine, achieve, inspire? and can overcome societal obstacles to accomplish amazing things.

??????????? Prior to her son, Darryl Jr., being diagnosed with autism, Jennifer was not at all familiar with the condition. ?I think the only thing I had seen on Autism was a video I had seen a few years ago. The day Darryl Jr. was diagnosed with Autism was scary. I was in this white room with the doctors just telling me ?he probably won?t be able to this, this, and this.? It was just all really negative,? Adams-Tucker said.

??????????? She looked to her husband for support. ?I looked at Darryl with tears in my eyes. Darryl looked up to the doctors and said ?That?s okay, he?s still my boy!?? These were the words that would carry her through a variety of emotions, but at that point she realized that she and her husband needed to do their research.

??????????? She found that Autism is a general term for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Approximately 1 in 88 children in the United States has an Autism Spectrum Disorder?ASD?s are almost 5 times more common among boys than among girls and they are reported in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups.

??????????? ?Autism appears to have its roots in very early brain development. However, the most obvious signs of Autism and symptoms of Autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age. For this reason, early diagnosis and treatment is essential for developmental progress to be made with Autistic children.

??????????? This is where First Steps came into play for Jennifer and her family. First Steps is a statewide early intervention system that provides services to children with developmental disabilities from birth to age 3 and their families. ?It was great. They came into my home and provided my children with the therapy that they needed.??

??????????? In addition the therapy, another key to managing the process of raising a child with Autism is finding a support system. This was especially true for Jennifer after her youngest two children, twins Danyelle and Dominique, were diagnosed with autism. ?I knew the signs and was more prepared for the diagnosis, so it wasn?t as hard at first. But then I realized, this is still difficult, and I need support.?

??????????? Families for Effective Autism Treatment (FEAT) of Louisville is a non-profit organization that actively supports and funds Autism programs for the entire family. Created for families, FEAT of Louisville is dedicated to easing the Autism journey through ongoing support, education and programs. Much of our work is done by volunteers to assist in growing our support programs and services.

??????????? Jennifer knew that the support that she had received from various Autism outreach programs had helped both she and her children immensely on their journey, and she wanted to serve as an advocate for the special needs community. Jennifer had been keeping a journal, a ?letter to her children?, detailing their individual strengths and talents, and their struggles with autism. After some encouragement from family and friends, she had it published to serve as an encouragement to other parents of Autistic children.

??????????? ?I started volunteering at my local library to hold sessions where I discussed my book Autistic Angels; A Story for a Mother to her Children.? I invited special needs groups, such as FEAT of Louisville to come and give information to anyone who attended the event.? Soon after the event, FEAT asked me to become a member of their Board of Directors.? This enabled me to further reach out to my community.? I have been able to hold additional informational meetings at the Newburg Library and help with various other Autism awareness projects because of this opportunity,? Adams-Tucker said. And since that time her involvement has just continued to expand.

??????????? ?Just this year I was also asked to join the Exceptional Teens and Adults Board of Directors as well. Two weeks ago I received a call from Governor Beshear?s office.? I was told the Governor had appointed me to the Kentucky Early Intervention System Interagency Coordinating Council (ICC).? I was so excited; I did know what to do. In a nutshell, this council advises and assists First Steps, which my own children benefited greatly from.?

??????????? Sydney Tucker, Jennifer?s oldest daughter, also seeks to be an advocate for children with special needs. When asked if she knew that her siblings were different from her, she responded ?different, but not that different.? In November 2008, Sydney was featured in ?The O- Magazine? for her big dreams of becoming a special education teacher when she grows up. Her main motivation is her love for D.J., Danyelle, and Dominique.?

??????????? When asked what advice Jennifer would give a parent of a newly-diagnosed Autistic child, she replied, ?I would tell them, first of all, don?t give up. It is really hard sometimes, but don?t give up. Your child can achieve amazing things by getting the help they need through organizations like FEAT and First Steps. My kids? Autism varies with regards to severity, but they can all be happy. Then I would tell them to do whatever makes them feel comfortable; sometimes parents of Autistic children have to approach situations in public differently, and that?s okay.?

??????????? She went on to give the example of sending a letter to her church detailing her children?s individual disabilities and personalities, just to make the ministry faculty aware that her children?s behavior could sometimes be misunderstood as misbehavior, when in fact they are merely expressing themselves as children with Autism do. The resulting response was incredibly accommodating. Danyelle now sings in the church choir, and Darryl Jr. sometimes sits on the piano bench with his mom. ?I didn?t have to send that letter, but it definitely made me feel more comfortable.?

??????????? Overall, Jennifer and her husband Darryl, feel incredibly blessed- just as Jennifer seeks to bless and encourage other parents of Autistic children. She said that she simply hopes her story will inspire others to see in individuals with special needs what she has seen in her own children. Jennifer had concluded her book by saying, ?If your child has Autism, or any disability, be encouraged!? Your child is special and can achieve great things,? and through her work as an advocate for the special needs community, she is helping other children realize their full potential.

Mack gets endorsement of small business federation ? Central ...

Campaigning at an Orlando restaurant supply company, U.S. Rep. Connie Mack IV accepted the endorsement Tuesday from the National Federation of Independent Businesses.

?He has a very, very strong conservative record,? said the company?s chairman Jerry Pierce, incoming chairman of the NFIB/Florida Leadership Council.

The NFIB officially is non-partisan but almost universally conservative on business and tax issues, which leads it to regularly endorse Republicans. Still, Pierce cited the organization?s scorecard, which gave Mack, as a congressman from Fort Myers,?a 100 percent support rating on NFIB-watched legislation, and incumbent Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson a 37 percent rating.

In front of an intimate gathering of about 30 people, mostly small business owners, Mack??accepted the endorsement with a vow to continue to be pro-small business.

Mack, (shown above getting a shop tour from REW President Brad Pierce) is in the middle of a six-day campaign bus tour of Central and North Florida.

?This is about small business. As you look around our country right now, people are struggling to grow their businesses, people are struggling to keep the employees they have,? Mack said. ?Small businesses are what make up our communities. They?re our neighbors. They?re our friends. They?re our families. We need to have a government that honors and respects small business owners, not trying to pass laws and regulations that hurt small business owners.?

Hiring Someone

Research Shows, It?s time to turn Applicants into Employees

It takes a special breed of person to start a small business and make a go of it. He or she needs grit, determination, a great idea for delivering value to customers, an ability to put up with tremendous uncertainty, a flair for surrounding himself or herself with talented employees who share the company?s vision, and more. So much more.

During these times when economic conditions ?are still variable, at best, it can be hard to maintain the kind of optimism that fuels small business success. But somehow we?re doing it. Results announced by Rocket Lawyer, a company that specializes in legal services for small businesses, confirm that about a third of the 436 small businesses the firm surveyed nationwide announced plans to up their hiring during the latter part of 2012 and into early next year.

The survey found about half of small business owners remain seriously concerned about the economy, though more than half feels it?ll improve in the coming months. Overall, it seems, there?s at least an undercurrent of cautious optimism for US small businesses.

For those of us in HR in small businesses ? excuse me ? for those of us who are HR in small businesses, optimism signals a need to get ready. If hiring is likely to pick up ? and it appears that it is ? that means more work coming our way. Somehow, we have to find time in our busy days to prepare to become, uh, busier.

If you?re a one-person department (or maybe even a few people), you know that about the only way to make time in an already jammed workday is to figure how to handle the load more efficiently. In HR, making the jump from manual to automated HR management can be a powerful means of ramping up efficiency.

A cloud-based HR management system ? like BambooHR ? is all about efficiency. Because it?s easy to learn and intuitive to use, it doesn?t take months to get up to speed, as can be the case with complex in-house software. And Bamboo?s system comes with actual, live people who are there to help with the transition. The shift from the filing cabinet to the cloud is fast and non-traumatic. Characteristics we can all appreciate when we know there?s more work on the horizon.

  • Automating your HR data makes it possible to centralize information, to access it remotely, to create customized reports quickly, to enjoy the convenience of automatic backups and updates, and to streamline your work. With increased hiring ahead, it?s an opportune time to make the decision to leave spreadsheets and filing cabinets behind. The information you need on every employee can be at your fingertips. You can instantly access up-to-the-minute figures on training, benefits, accrued time off, and just about any custom factor you want to add.
  • When you?re hiring on new workers, the deluge of associated paperwork can go to the cloud, too. Forms, handbooks, applications, and other documents can be signed electronically and stored securely. That makes on-boarding and orientation much simpler for everyone.

If your company is among the one in three U.S. small businesses that anticipates growth in the months ahead, it?s time to make sure that your HR function is ready for the challenge. Upgrading to a cloud-based HR management system can help you streamline your work and increase efficiency ? freeing the time you need to make a list of all the other things you need to do to get ready! Isn?t success grand?

Paul Ryan Goes Local: Vice Presidential Nominee's Marathon Pace On Local Interview Circuit [[DO NOT PUB]]

ABC News' Michael Falcone and Shushannah Walshe report:

Over the last few days Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan has found his way into the living rooms of voters in Cincinnati, Lima and Dayton, Ohio as well as Miami, Orlando and West Palm Beach, Florida.

He wasn't actually sitting on those voters' couches - although his campaign schedule has taken him to Virginia, Ohio, Florida in recent days - but rather on their television screens.

In fact, since Mitt Romney tapped the Wisconsin congressman to be his running mate on August 11, Ryan has sat for more than 150 television, radio and newspaper interviews with the vast majority of those taking place at the local and regional level.

By the campaign's count and an ABC News tally Ryan passed the 100 local interview mark last weekend, and so far, has chalked up something on the order of 108 since early August.

A typical day for Ryan can include five or more interviews. Take last Saturday, for example. Ryan sat for interviews with the ABC and Fox affiliates in Miami, the NBC station in West Palm Beach and the CBS, Fox and NBC affiliates in Orlando as well one central Florida cable channel. On Monday local stations in Dayton and Lima, Ohio as well as one in Fort Wayne, Indiana got time with the vice presidential hopeful. And on Tuesday, Ryan taped interviews with three affiliates in Cincinnati.

And though Ryan drew flak for low-balling his fastest marathon time, he has far outdistanced his Democratic counterpart, Vice President Joe Biden - at least on the local interview circuit.

To be sure, Biden has kept up a busy pace on the campaign trail, traveling to Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Ohio, Virginia, Iowa and New Hampshire in recent weeks. In just a few days, he heads to Florida, another crucial battleground state. And at almost every official campaign stop, the vice president manages to squeeze in some time talking to locals at unannounced visits to venues like restaurants and high school football fields.

"In more than 100 events this year, the Vice President has been campaigning in states across the country directly connecting with voters in their communities," a Biden campaign official said.

The local television strategy seems straightforward: It's viewers in these key swing-state markets they need to reach heading into Election Day much more than those watching on a national level. The data-driven Romney campaign can pinpoint the exact markets where they need to deploy Ryan and, for that matter, Romney and his wife, Ann, who also have busy local interview schedules. The subsequent coverage bolsters the paid advertising dollars they are pumping into those areas.

Though the campaign frequently makes Ryan available for the local broadcaster, the candidate has yet to hold a formal press conference with his traveling press corps. Although he has held informal question-and-answer sessions on his campaign plane and did so while buying oranges in Florida last week.

The goal is also to bring the Romney-Ryan ticket's message directly to voters without straying too far off talking points. But many of the local interviewers have other ideas. Over the weekend, a reporter for the local NBC News Miami affiliate, WPTV, asked Ryan whether "Don't Ask Don't Tell" shouldn't be reinstated.

"Now that it's done, we should not reverse it," Ryan said. "I think that would be a step in the wrong direction because people have already disclosed themselves."

Ryan added: "I think this issue is past us. It's done. And, I think we need to move on."

Local affiliates also provided the venue for Ryan's first response to his running mate's hidden-camera comments about the "47 percent."

"He said it was an inelegant way of describing the point we're trying to make which is we need economic growth, job creation, we need upward mobility and the Obama economy is not producing that," Ryan said to ABC News' New Hampshire affiliate, WMUR on Sept. 18.

And of course, it's hard to forget Ryan's unusual interview with Roanoke, Virginia CBS affiliate WDBJ-TV, when he played word association with a reporter and the world learned his food preferences.

"Having a piece of cake is just like having asparagus, as far as I'm concerned," Ryan told reporter Orlando Salinas.

Romney-Ryan campaign aides say they plan to keep Ryan on a steady diet of local interviews heading into Nov. 6

Zombees: First 'zombie' bees found in Washington state

The infection is another threat to?bees?that are needed to pollinate crops.

By Associated Press / September 24, 2012

Mark Hohn, a novice beekeeper in Kent, holds up a plastic bag with a dead zombie bee and pupae ? two at each end of the bag, Sept. 22. Hohn found that his bees are infected with a parasite that causes them to fly at night and lurch around erratically until they die.

The infection is as grim as it sounds: "Zombie?bees" have a parasite that causes them to fly at night and lurch around erratically until they die.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

And experts say the condition has crept into Washington state.

"I joke with my kids that the zombie apocalypse is starting at my house," said Mark Hohn, a novice beekeeper who spotted the infected insects at his suburban Seattle home.

Hohn returned from vacation a few weeks ago to find many of his?bees?either dead or flying in jerky patterns and then flopping on the floor.

He remembered hearing about zombie?bees, so he collected several of the corpses and popped them into a plastic bag. About a week later, the Kent man had evidence his?bees?were infected: the pupae of parasitic flies.

"Curiosity got the better of me," Hohn said.

The zombie?bees?were the first to be confirmed in Washington state, The Seattle Times reported.

San Francisco State University biologist John Hafernik first discovered zombie?bees?in California in 2008.

Hafernik now uses a website to recruit citizen scientists like Hohn to track the infection across the country. Observers also have found zombie?bees?in Oregon and South Dakota.

The infection is another threat to?bees?that are needed to pollinate crops. Hives have been failing in recent years due to a mysterious ailment called colony collapse disorder, in which all the adult honey?bees?in a colony suddenly die.

The life cycle of the fly that infects zombie?bees?is reminiscent of the movie "Alien," the newspaper reported. A small adult female lands on the back of a honeybee and injects eggs into the?bee's?abdomen. The eggs hatch into maggots.

"They basically eat the insides out of the?bee," Hafernik said.

After consuming their host, the maggots pupate, forming a hard outer shell that looks like a fat, brown grain of rice. That's what Hohn found in the plastic bag with the dead?bees. Adult flies emerge in three to four weeks.

There's no evidence yet that the parasitic fly is a major player in the?bees' decline, but it does seem the pest is targeting new hosts, said Steve Sheppard, chairman of the entomology department at Washington State University.

"It may occur a lot more widely than we think," he said.

That's what Hafernik hopes to find out with his website, zombeewatch.org. The site offers simple instructions for collecting suspect?bees, watching for signs of parasites and reporting the results.

Once more people start looking, the number of sightings will probably climb, Hohn said.

Tom Cruise dines with mystery woman at London?s The Ivy restaurant

Tom Cruise, 50, beamed with happiness after he dined at London?s The Ivy restaurant with friends, believed to include Touched by an Angel actress Roma Downey and her husband Mark Burnett.

The Top Gun star was spotted leaving the plush restaurant wearing his trademark aviators, black trousers and a dark jumper.

Tom Cruise is currently in London filming sci-fiction thriller All You Need Is Kill, which stars the actor as a soldier who dies in during battle against aliens.

However, Tom Cruise finds that he can relive his last day over and over again, and becomes more skilled as time goes on.

Directed by The Bourne Identity?s Doug Liman, the film also stars Emily Blunt and Titanic?s Bill Paxton as the tough leader of Tom Cruise?s platoon.

Since he began filming in London last month, Tom Cruise has managed to find the city?s nightspots with ease, and he was seen leaving Annabel?s private members? restaurant and nightclub last week in the early morning.

Filming the movie in London has seen criticism aimed Tom Cruise?s way after it was reported it?s been over 50 days since he was publicly spotted with his six-year-old daughter Suri.

However, the actor?s lawyer Bert Fields has hit out at the suggestions Tom Cruise isn?t a devoted father, insisting the Hollywood icon speaks to his daughter ?every day?.

Bert Fields added: ?Tom has been in England shooting a film. He calls Suri every day, sometimes twice a day.

?He loves Suri and is a constant presence in her life. As in the past, when he?s shooting in a foreign country, he has to rely on daily phone calls.?

Suri Cruise lives with her mother Katie Holmes after?her fatherand the former Dawson?s Creek divorced earlier this year.

He was last seen with his daughter during a daddy day out at Disney World in Orlando, Florida on August 16.

Tom Cruise is believed to be considering a permanent base in New York so he can spend more time with his daughter.

PFT: Smith told Newton to stop sulking

Da'Norris Searcy, Kevin BossAP

We cover all of the biggest injury stories throughout the day on Friday, but feel free to use this as a one-stop shop to catch up on those posts and any other names worth mentioning that we?ll throw in here every Friday.

Rams at Bears

The big story here is the running backs. Steven Jackson is questionable after missing practice all week because of a groin injury and Matt Forte will miss the game after spraining his ankle in the Bears? loss to the Packers. Rams defensive tackle Michael Brockers is out of his walking boot, but won?t play Sunday. Tackle Rodger Saffold is also out for St. Louis.

Bills at Browns

The Browns will be without linebacker James-Michael Johnson and tight end Alex Smith, while kick returner Josh Cribbs is questionable. For Buffalo, safety Jairus Byrd and linebacker Nick Barnett are both expected to play despite missing practice all week.

Buccaneers at Cowboys

The Cowboys ruled out defensive tackle Jay Ratliff for the third straight game. Defensive end Kenyon Coleman is also out and safety Gerald Sensabaugh isn?t likely to play because of a calf injury. The Buccaneers ruled out cornerback Anthony Gaitor, but are otherwise light on injuries.

Jaguars at Colts

Colts wide receiver Austin Collie practiced all week, but his status is contingent on a meeting with doctors Saturday. Linebacker Pat Angerer and guard Joe Reitz are out while linebacker Dwight Freeney is questionable after missing Week Two with an ankle injury. Linebacker Daryl Smith, defensive end George Selvie and guard Eben Britton are all out for the Jaguars, while running back Rashad Jennings is doubtful with the knee injury that kept him out last week.

Jets at Dolphins

Cornerback Darrelle Revis is probable, but Rex Ryan said the Jets are going to be without fullback John Conner and linebacker Bryan Thomas. Tight end Dustin Keller is questionable with a hamstring injury that forced him to miss the loss to the Steelers. Dolphins running back Daniel Thomas is probable after missing last week with a concussion while defensive lineman Tony McDaniel is out.

49ers at Vikings

Wide receiver Ted Ginn and running back Brandon Jacobs are both questionable, just as they were before being held out of last week?s game with the Lions. Linebacker Erin Henderson won?t play for the Vikings due to a concussion.

Chiefs at Saints

The Chiefs will be without tight end Kevin Boss and have several key players ? safety Kendrick Lewis, defensive tackle Anthony Toribio, guard Ryan Lilja and wide receiver Dexter McCluster among them ? listed as questionable. Saints wide receiver Marques Colston is questionable with a foot injury, although he?s expected to play unless he looks bad in pregame.

Lions at Titans

Safety Louis Delmas is out again for the Lions, but cornerbacks Bill Bentley and Chris Houston are both probable to make their returns. Another corner, Jacob Lacey, is questionable and tight end Tony Scheffler is doubtful. The Titans will be without linebacker Colin McCarthy and running back Javon Ringer is questionable after missing the first two games.

Bengals at Redskins

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan doesn?t expect WR Pierre Gar?on to play, but safety Brandon Meriweather could make his 2012 debut after being listed as questionable. Bengals cornerback Leon Hall missed practice the last two days and is questionable. Defensive end Carlos Dunlap and running back Bernard Scott should both be in the lineup for the first time in the regular season.

Eagles at Cardinals

Cardinals quarterback John Skelton has returned to practice, but he?s questionable and not likely to see action. Tight end Todd Heap and safety Adrian Wilson are also questionable. The Eagles will play without wide receiver Jeremy Maclin and tackle King Dunlap.

Falcons at Chargers

The Chargers should get running back Ryan Mathews and tight end Antonio Gates back after they both missed the win over the Titans. Cornerback Christopher Owens is out for the Falcons and linebacker Sean Weatherspoon is questionable.

Texans at Broncos

Broncos guard Chris Kuper is the only player ruled out for either team. Several players are probable on both sides, which means that both teams should be at or right next to full strength come kickoff.

Steelers at Raiders

Safety Troy Polamalu, running back Rashard Mendenhall and linebacker James Harrison are all out again for the Steelers. Tackle Mike Adams is questionable after missing practice all week. The Raiders ruled out tackle Khalif Barnes and cornerback Shawntae Spencer. Linebacker Rolando McClain is questionable as a result of a concussion.

Patriots at Ravens

Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has been ruled out after hurting his ankle a few plays into the loss to the Cardinals and figures to miss several more games. Defensive tackle Justin Francis will miss the game as well. Tackle Sebastian Vollmer, guard Logan Mankins and wide receiver Brandon Lloyd are among 10 Patriots listed as questionable for Sunday night. Tackle Jah Reid is doubtful while the rest of the Ravens appear healthy ahead of Sunday?s final matchup.

Creative Internet Marketing Techniques And Methods You Can Use ...

Every once in a while, we?re struck with an idea that we wish we could turn into a business. The Internet makes it easier for an individual to build a successful business with an inventive product and effective online marketing. If you are seeking some marketing help, then continue on to the article below.

A sense of security is important to many online shoppers. Make sure that your site makes your potential customers comfortable shopping on the site. Add a link to your site?s privacy policy on each page in a visible location above the fold. This can put your customers? minds at ease, letting them know their personal information will be securely handled. They?ll never have to worry about identity theft when ordering from you!

If hiring someone who specializes in marketing is out of the question, take advantage of the many free online tools available. Check out online communities for business owners, start following marketing blogs, download free e-books, and check out free seminars.

TIP! If you want your customers to trust you, back up any claims with actual proof. You can even try videos.

An effective Internet marketing campaign will result in the creation of further marketing efforts. The idea is so simple that it seems somewhat bizarre. Simply put, you want to develop a platform where a sequence of events happen repeatedly; customers search and locate your business, purchase your products and then repeat the process.

Making your site stand out from the rest is a great marketing tip. With so many sites to choose from, you must be able to attract your target market by setting your site apart. A simple way to do this, is by highlighting a special service that you offer.

Start small when you are first setting out with marketing your product or service on a new website. Having a reasonably large site is good, but search engines are more likely to rank your site well if it has around ten or twenty thousand pages.

TIP! Third-party security for transactions is a must if you?re any kind of volume business. There are many third-party companies available including VeriSign and McAffee.

The more you know about your competition, the more successful you will be. Know what they are offering compared to what you are offering, and make the superior quality and value of your products obvious. Whether you like it or not, this is an important piece of the Internet marketing puzzle.

Be sure to keep statistics that are detailed. You need to focus on things like your traffic numbers per month, your hits, your conversions, your referrals, and other types of stats that may be pertinent to your business. Keeping track of what does and does not work is important.

You should ensure that your business website?s URL is a simple one. If you can arrange it, use your business name as a website name. While customers can Google you, make it simpler by having an address they can easily remember and type into their search bars.

TIP! Your internet marketing strategy doesn?t have to be limited to the internet itself. You can contact other bloggers or anyone else in your field and then hold a conference some place in person.

If you are trying to find a niche market, learn what people are complaining the most about. You should also take advantage of your natural talents, education and experience when considering which market niche to fill. This can help you to improve the quality of peoples lives. Trying to solve problems is a great way to build your reputation online, and complaints can help you zero in on the best problems to tackle. This is a good way to target a specific audience and to draw their attention.

Your internet marketing plan can include a well-written, public relations page about your business. Add content containing information from ezines and newspapers. Using public relations tactics can help make your business more accessible.

TIP! If you want to improve satisfaction with your website, create a frequently asked questions section. In many cases, a good FAQ can head off a visitor?s problems before they become too frustrating and keep them satisfied with your website.

Attract visitors to your site by offering up a valuable and relevant feature or service. Relevant articles will also improve your visibility to the major search engines. You can set yourself and your business apart by being innovative and offering interesting content that will gain attention.

Instead of looking at marketing on the Internet as a career, look at it as a hobby. If you realize this is something you are good at you might consider it as a career, but initially try thinking of it as something fun rather than a money making endeavor.

Build a dictionary of terms to seem more professional. Your customers and competitors will probably use this glossary and regard you more highly as a result. It will strengthen your reputation as others who are searching for these terms will be able to locate your site.

TIP! You can use your online marketing materials to create an emotional attachment between the customer and your product or service. Try to let the visitor in on how much your product or service would make their life better.

Determine who comprises your intended audience, and how to most effectively entice them to visit your site. When you have identified your target audience, producing attractive content that will keep them coming back to your site will be easier.

Your internet marketing efforts should not be implemented without heavy forethought. You should get an experienced professional, whom you admire, to tutor you. Many of these same people have advice columns or will advise you personally for a fee. Make sure to stick with a system that you think is good. Remember that it may be slow to start, but it is worth your effort and time.

Your comapny needs a tagline and a logo no matter its size. These tools can help build your brand and help you be remembered by your prospects. A good slogan or a visually appealing logo can influence a customer to be loyal over the long term. When thinking about products that you sell, your slogan will drive traffic to your site because it has memory recognition.

TIP! Offer a free gift with purchase ? this is a great way of making your customers feel like they are valued. Internet marketing strategies sometimes forget things like giving free gifts to customers, but this pays huge dividends in the long run.

A great way to get more visitors is to give them an incentive like something for free. You can put whatever you will be offering into the course. Take steps to publicize the deal.

Make a page on some of the social networking sites. Be careful you never send spam to someone because that is something you can get into legal trouble over.

As mentioned in the introduction, any business ultimately wants sustainability and longevity. Whether your business size is large or small, continued success comes from an effective marketing strategy. Every business must start small, and you can employ what you?ve just learned here to start growing your small business

TIP! When you are creating your website, you need to make it very content related and comprehensive. Your chief focus must be to instill knowledge in your customer base in a short period of time, so they know what they are purchasing.

Look down the street. Here comes a 1952 Chevy four-door in robin?s egg blue. What a beautiful car. This car has been restored to its fabulous condition by an automotive craftsman from rural Kansas.

Alan Siebert is the auto specialist who redid this car. Fittingly, his business is called CARS which stands for Classic Automotive Restoration Specialists.

Alan was born in Great Bend. His father ran the body shop for a local auto dealership named Spruills which is now Marmie Ford. When Alan?s father wanted to start a business of his own, he opened a body shop in the Stafford County community of St. John, a town of 1,215 people. That?s rural ? but there?s more.

Alan helped out in his dad?s body shop as a kid and moved into the business himself after graduation, working for his father and learning from him first hand. ?He was my vo-tech teacher,? Alan said with a smile.

Now Alan has more than 30 years experience in the business. Of course, he?s a rookie compared to his father, who began in 1949 and was still coming to the shop regularly until he got sick in 2012. That would give Alan?s dad 63 years of experience in the auto repair business. Wow ? Alan has a long way to go.

In 2007, Alan?s wife Janet transferred to a job in Arkansas City. Eventually Alan transitioned to a new business and new shop in the Arkansas City area as well. They live in the nearby community of Parkerfield, population 342 people. Now, that?s rural. Alan also broadened his business from auto repair to auto restoration, which is one of his specialties.

The new business, as noted before, is called CARS: Classic Automotive Restoration Specialists.? There is a lot of interest in classic cars around Arkansas City.

?Ark City has a big classic car show each year,? Alan said. ?It?s called the Last Run. Last year was the 40th annual, and they had more than 600 entries.?

Alan?s business can handle the full gamut of auto restoration and repair from A to Z ? or as his business card says, ?From Model A?s to Z28?s.? He has literally worked on everything from Model A?s to the most modern automobiles. Of course, lots of restorations involve muscle cars from the 1960s and `70s.

?I?ve worked on Mustangs and Camaros and Corvettes from that period,? Alan said. Now those were real cars! Alan worked on a gold 1970 Plymouth Duster and a 1968 Barracuda which was banana yellow.? ?It sounds crazy, but we added a black stripe and it looked really cool,? he said.

One time Alan went to look at a used car in the Dodge City area but it wasn?t suitable. ?What else do you have?? Alan asked. The man showed him a 1962 Austin Healy which the man wanted to gut and turn into a salad bar in a restaurant. Alan bought and restored the car, saving it from a fate of lettuce and ranch dressing spills.

Then there was Carol, who came to Alan to ask about a 1952 Chevy four-door. It had been Carol?s family car which she had driven to high school. Her grandmother ended up with the car, which had deteriorated and then sat for 25 years. The car was in terrible condition.

?I could see the ground through the floorboards,? Alan said. And talk about bucket seats ? the front seat was literally a big bucket turned upside down.

But Carol?s 45th high school reunion was approaching and she wanted that old car restored.? After hours and hours of work, including Janet and their daughters, Alan restored that car to pristine condition and painted it the original color.

Look down the street. There goes a 1952 Chevy four-door in robin?s egg blue. The driver is Carol, with a big smile on her face as she goes to her 45th high school reunion in style. We commend Alan Siebert, a classic automotive restoration specialist, for making a difference with his craftsmanship and workmanship. In my opinion, building such a business in rural Kansas is the way it ?auto? be.
